MANSFIELD — Richland County Prosecutor Jodie Schumacher has alerted the public about a possible phone scam taking place around the county.
She said her office had received a call from a concerned citizen about the scam.
“This person indicated they received multiple calls, always from a different, non-local number. The person on the other end indicated they were with the ‘prosecutor’s office’ and demanded personal identifying information from the concerned citizen,” Schumacher said.
“They described the caller as very demanding, persistent and did not sound as if they were local to our area.
“The caller(s) would never identify what prosecutor’s office they were calling from—only that they were with ‘the prosecutor’s office’ — nor would they provide a name to the concerned citizen.”
Schumacher said the citizen did the right thing by contacting her office and encouraged others to do the same if they get similar calls.
“We will never ask for personally identifying information. We will always identify ourselves by full name and our affiliation with the Richland County Prosecutor’s Office,” she said.
