James “Jim” Leroy Horning, 89, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 16, 2026, at his residence in Crestline.

Jim was born in Crestline on April 23, 1936, to the late Clement and Esther (Best) Horning. He married Janice M (Niedermier) Horning on October 9, 1965, and she preceded him in death on December 3, 2021.

A proud graduate of Crestline High School’s Class of 1954, Jim went on to have a fulfilling career with Sprint until his well-deserved retirement. A devout member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Crestline, he found joy in helping others and was deeply committed to his faith.

Jim was known for his friendly demeanor and his knack for telling a good joke. His passions included taxidermy, woodworking, and, most notably, his love for the outdoors. He found peace while fishing, gardening, and caring for his beautiful flowers. Jim affectionately earned the nickname “Grandpa Tractor” for giving rides through the woods on the beloved family Ford tractor.

He leaves behind a cherished family that includes his daughter, Jen (Gary) Engler, his son, Josh (Amy) Horning and son-in-law, Bruce Mower. He was especially proud of his five grandchildren, Ryan Horning, Gwen Horning, Maura Horning, Tyler Davis, and Brett Lardinais. Jim is also survived by his siblings, Marilyn Vogt, Jacque (Jane) Horning, Dave Horning, Elaine Shirley, and Larry (Laura) Horning, as well as many nieces and nephews with whom he enjoyed the many hours of quality time spent together sharing stories or playing cards.

In addition to his wife and parents, Jim was preceded in death by his daughter, Jill Mower, his grandson, Justin Davis, and his brother, Herb Horning.
