SHELBY — Juan Barndollar-Stuckman has always enjoyed a good treasure hunt.

“I’ve always liked going garage saleing,” she said. “It’s fun finding stuff. You find it, clean it up, make sure it doesn’t break.”

Barndollar-Stuckman recently opened a storefront in Shelby where shoppers can hunt for treasures of their own.

Shed Penny and Friends carries a variety of antiques and vintage finds, candles, goat milk soaps, one-of-a-kind handcrafted jewelry and homemade bread.

The store is located at 80 West Main Street in Shelby. The historic building has previously been home to a saloon, a barbershop and most recently, Johnny’s Lunch.

A massive, wood carved bar from the building’s early saloon days in the 1800s adds to the atmosphere.

“I love the bar,” Barndollar-Stuckman said. “It fits right in with everything.”

Barndollar-Stuckman previously had a shop called Shed Penny in Mansfield, where she and her husband Dan sold upcycled furniture and antiques. The storefront closed during the pandemic, though the couple continued to sell online.

In addition to Shed Penny and Friends, Barndollar-Stuckman has a stall at Mansfield Vintiques and More.

But opening a shop on Main Street felt like a homecoming for the 1976 Shelby High School grad.

“I wanted to be more involved in Shelby events and with the Shelby downtown business team. I’m on that team, so I wanted to have a storefront down here,” Barndollar-Stuckman said.

Jessica Gribben, economic and community development director with the Richland Area Chamber, said she was excited to see a new business on Main Street.

“It adds to the vibrancy of downtown Shelby and all the good things happening here,” she said. “Juan is no stranger to Shelby.

“She has been a community advocate for a long time, and participates in all the small business stuff happening downtown, so it’s great to see her have her own storefront.”

The shop will host a Galentine’s Event on Thursday with sweet treats and a raffle basket giveaway.

Shed Penny and Friends is open Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
