Property Transfers: West Creek Conservancy scores big on former Camp Covert property for $2.6 million

SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP — West Creek Conservancy purchased 1366 Orweiler Road and V/L on Orweiler Road from Camp Covert for $2.6 million.

The property sits next to the Ohio Bird Sanctuary (OBS), which was a key factor in the decision to purchase the land, said Derek Schafer, executive director of West Creek Conservancy.

West Creek Conservancy is based in Parma. It’s website states its purpose as “We’re reclaiming vacant urban lands and restoring streams, wetlands, woods and natural habitats right here in our community.”

Schafer said he did not expect the deal to move as quickly as it did after the property went on the market, with the purchase finalized before the new year.

“I saw nearly 100 acres next to OBS and thought it was a good opportunity to help protect it,” he said. “We’ll see what species and vegetation we can use to help complement them.”

While there are no immediate plans for the property, Schafer said the land is a rare find, particularly because it offers direct access to Clearfork Reservoir. He noted most properties the company acquires are already primed for restoration, making this purchase unique.

“A lot of times we have property we don’t need to do anything to — this one is different,” he said. “We bought it, so now we’ll structure it and see what we can do.”
