James E. “Jim” Van Riper, age 84 of Mansfield, passed away on Thursday, January 29, 2026, at his home. He was born on November 12, 1941, in Cleveland to the late Warren and Catherine (Clemm) Van Riper, and on June 17, 1967, he married the love of his life, Wanda (Owens).

Jim proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, and he went on to work as a TV repairman before eventually beginning to work as a mechanic, which became his career for 30 years. He was a talented bowler, joining several leagues over the years and competing in tournaments all over the country, and he was also an avid golfer. He was an incredible athlete overall, but his talent especially shined when he played fastpitch softball in the military. He also boxed during his time in the military.

Above all, he loved his family, especially his grandkids, who he loved more than anything, and he will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his children Sherry (Jay) Collins, Christine Schmidt, Robert “Bob” (Tammy) Van Riper, and Catherine “Cate” Van Riper; his siblings Carol (Harvey) McGowan, Tom Van Riper, Nancy (Jay) Price, and Gary (Cheryl) Van Riper; his grandchildren Jessica, Ashley, Brittney, James, Sam, Ryan, and Jaxon; his great-grandchildren Cameron, Aiden, Nolan, Zoey, Sophia, Judson, Calum, Charlie, and Tatum; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Wanda Van Riper, his parents Warren and Catherine Van Riper, and his brothers Charles Weeks and Bob Van Riper.
