ONTARIO — A 3-year-old child was struck by a bullet Wednesday night in a shooting on the city’s east side, according to Ontario police.

The child was taken by Springfield Township EMS to OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital for treatment. The injuries were not considered life-threatening, police said.

Ontario police were called at about 10:20 p.m. to a residence on Landings Court after receiving a report a child had been shot, police said in an emailed news release Thursday at 6:13 a.m.

Officers established a perimeter and searched the area with assistance from the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, which helped secure the scene and surrounding neighborhood.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded to the scene to provide assistance with crime-scene evidence collection. 

No weapons were recovered during the initial search, and investigators determined there was no ongoing threat to the community. Agents from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation assisted with evidence collection at the scene.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear. No charges had been filed as of Thursday morning and the investigation was continuing.
