Following a short hospital stay, Paul Jerome Weitzel passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on December 30, surrounded by loved ones.
Born on July 31,1937 in Kansas City, Missouri, Paul lived a wonderful life, marked by dedication, excellence, and an unwavering commitment to his family, community, and professional endeavors.
After completing his education at The Ohio State University in 1961, Paul embarked on a distinguished career, first in public accounting and later in corporate accounting and finance in the utility industry. He spent the prime of his career at The United Telephone Company of Ohio and Sprint, where he earned a reputation for integrity, knowledge and mentorship. His job titles included Treasurer and Controller for the Ohio division of the phone company, where he was known as a leader and mentor to many. Paul retired in 1996, spending the next chapter of life traveling and enjoying the company of family and friends.
Paul was deeply committed to his family and loved nothing more than spending time with them. He was a beloved father, grandfather, husband, and son. He is survived by wife Susan, children Mark (Kelli), Anne (Steve) and Becky, stepchildren Ellen (Timothy), Thomas (Amanda) and Jason (Marlena), grandchildren Jacob, Jordyn, Giovanni, Tomasina, Luciano, Vincenzo, Christopher, Victoria, Jayden, Devin, Alana and Alex, and siblings Kay, Tom (Jan), John (Pam) and Steve (Pam).
Paul was preceded in death by parents Paul Weitzel and Marie Eifert Weitzel, and wives Mary Owsley Weitzel and Kacey Singer Weitzel.
In his personal life, Paul was known for his devotion to the Catholic church, particularly St. Peter parish. He helped create and lead the Serra/Vocations Club and counted collections for many years for St. Peter. He also used his business background to assist with the parish budgeting process.
Paul was an avid sports fan. He owned season tickets to Ohio State football games for several decades and loved to share game experiences with people important to him. He played and coached softball into his 60s. He attended so many girls high school basketball games that he naturally became a scout and statistician for St. Peter’s team. Golfing with friends and family brought him great joy regardless of his score, particularly in retirement.
Paul will be remembered for his extraordinary career, his generosity of spirit, and profound love for his family. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Thursday, January 8, at St. Peter Catholic Church, 60 S. Mulberry Street in Mansfield. A Funeral Mass will be held following visitation at 11:00. Burial will occur at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to either St. Peter Catholic Church or St. Peter School.
