MANSFIELD — William Myers’ dedication to serving soldiers didn’t end when he retired from the military.
As commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9943, Myers has regularly partnered with the Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging to better support veterans throughout Richland County.
Through his leadership and the Post’s contributions of $80,000 since 2022, the AAA5 has been able to provide more home modifications and essential items for veterans and their surviving spouses.
“When I was deployed to Iraq, my mission was simple. Make sure the soldiers under our command were taken care of and had everything they needed to be successful,” he said.
“Fast forward to 2021, when I was elected post commander, and the responsibility never left me.”
The AAA5 honored Myers this month, presenting him with the Award of Excellence at its annual meeting.
“(Myers) and VFW Post 9943 have sparked a ripple effect, encouraging other VFW posts to join this work, strengthening a network of support that just continues to grow,” said Trae Turner, AAA5’s chief of planning and development.
Myers said he was humbled by the award, but his first reaction to the news was that he didn’t want his name on a plaque.
“I have always believed that any success we have is a result of a total team effort. Without the support, dedication and service of our post members, none of this would be possible,” he said.
“We stand on the shoulders of those who serve before us, and we work every day to support those who continue to serve and sacrifice.”
Myers said partnering with the AAA5 has aligned perfectly with his passion to help fellow military members.
“I accept this recognized recognition, not for myself, but on behalf of every member of our post and every person who believes in serving those who have served,” Myers said. “Thank you again. God bless our country and God bless our veterans.”
Ohio’s District 5 Area Agency on Aging serves older adults and adults with disabilities in nine counties: Ashland, Crawford, Huron, Knox, Marion, Morrow, Richland, Seneca and Wyandot.
Other honorees included Tina Groves-Pine, Clint Knight, Philip DeVoe, Diane Ramey and Mayor of Marion Bill Collins.
