MANSFIELD — It’s no accident Sam Gwirtz wears jersey No. 5 for the Shelby Whippets.
The senior linebacker wanted to be Brennan Armstrong when he grew up.
Gwirtz stopped by the Inside The Lines podcast studio ahead of Shelby’s Division IV state championship game. The Whippets play Cleveland Glenville at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Canton’s Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.
Gwirtz was a quarterback in middle school and idolized Armstrong, who piloted Shelby to the state semifinals in 2017. He talked about changing positions, rediscovering his love for the game and what it would mean to the football-mad Shelby community to bring home a state title.
