Ivy Mae Gibson, 90, passed away on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at Woodside Village. She was born on May 4, 1935, to the late Linzy and Mae (Posey) Strader in Orlando, West Virginia.
After graduating from Burnsville High School in 1955, Ivy began the greatest chapter of her life when she married her soulmate, John A. Gibson III, in 1958. Their 44 years together before his passing in 2002 were filled with love, laughter, and a bond that remained steadfast throughout every season of life.
Ivy was an avid reader who could lose herself for hours in a good book, and she never missed her favorite game shows. Her love of puzzles of all kinds kept her mind sharp and her spirit bright. A devoted bluegrass fan, she found great joy in attending concerts and festivals, where the music and community filled her heart.
At home, she expressed her love through cooking. Her kitchen was always warm, busy, and full of delicious aromas. She was talented at canning, and she took pride in making sure no one ever left her home hungry. Feeding others was one of her greatest joys, a true expression of her generosity.
Family meant everything to her. She cherished her grandkids and great-grandchildren, celebrating every milestone and showering them with affection. Her bond with her sisters was lifelong and unbreakable, full of laughter, shared memories, and daily conversations. She also treasured her regular visits to the hair salon, where she enjoyed being pampered and catching up with friends.
Left to cherish Ivy’s memory are her children, Kimberly (Don) Oates; her grandchildren, Ryan (Michele) Oates, Robbie Oates, and Rusty Oates; her great-grandchildren, Makenna Oates and Rynlee Oates; and her siblings, Shirley Williams, Mina Luzader, and Junior Strader.
Along with her parents and her husband John, Ivy is preceded in death by her son, John “Guppy” Gibson IV, and her siblings, Wesley Riffle; James Strader; John Strader; Richard Strader; Clifford Strader; Franklin “Dee” Strader; Glenna Lips; Herbert Strader; and Louise Strader.
