COLUMBUS — Lexington will host a monster showdown on Friday night when undefeated Ashland comes calling.
While that game will determine the outright Ohio Cardinal Conference champion, the Minutemen will open the postseason at home regardless of the outcome (8-1 overall, 5-0 in the OCC).
Lex already has clinched a home playoff game, according to computer points expert Joe Eitel. The Minutemen are third in Division III, Region 10 with 18.0899 points. A win would cement a top-four finish in the region and an opening-round bye. A loss would leave Lexington no worse than sixth, with a home postseason date in the playoff opener.
The top 12 teams in each region will qualify for the playoffs. The top four seeds will get a first-round bye.
Ashland is fifth in Division II, Region 7 with 20.8444 points. The Arrows have clinched a home playoff game and have a chance to gain a first-round bye with a win at Lex.
Ontario is alive in Region 10, slotted at 12th (the final playoff spot) with 9.2944 points. The Warriors (5-4 overall) host River Valley (3-6), but even with a win do not control their own destiny. They will play the waiting game on Friday night for their postseason fate.
Three Mansfield-area teams have already clinched playoff spots in Division IV, Region 14. Undefeated Shelby (9-0 overall, 6-0 in the MOAC) is the No. 1 seed in the region and will stay that way no matter the result after Friday night’s date at Marion Harding (3-7, 2-5). The Whippets (26.8111 points) are playing for a perfect regular season and yet another undisputed MOAC championship.
Galion, which gave Shelby its only real challenge this year in a 45-34 decision on Sept. 12, is third in the region with 19.0056 points. The Tigers (8-1, 5-1) host Clear Fork (6-3, 4-2) in an intriguing matchup.
Win or lose Galion will have a home playoff game, but a victory secures a bye. Even with a loss the Tigers could get a bye depending on how other teams fare.
Meanwhile, the Colts are eighth in the region at 12.6000 points. A victory could propel Clear Fork as high as third and a bye, while a loss could still lead to a home playoff game in the top eight, or a first-round road trip with a finish as low as 11th.
Division VI, Region 23 has four Mansfield-area teams in contention.
Mount Gilead (8-1) and Colonel Crawford (8-1) lead the way at third and fourth respectively in the region. Both have already clinched postseason berths. Neither a win nor a loss will determine anything on its own. Each team could end up with a bye, a home playoff game, or a road date.
The Indians (15.8611 points) are at Cardington (3-6), hoping to earn a piece of the Know Morrow Athletic Conference championship with a win and a Centerburg loss at Fredericktown.
Meanwhile, Colonel Crawford (15.5611 points) is also playing for a share of the Northern 10 crown when it hosts Wynford (3-6).
Crestview (5-4) is 14th with 8.9111 points. But the Cougars must win at Mapleton (2-7) on Friday night, and hope for help. The best-case scenario would be an 11th-place finish in the region.
Northmor (5-4, 3-3 in the KMAC) is 15th in the region with 8.8778 points. The Knights are home to Loudonville (3-6), which is also still alive for a postseason berth in Region 27.
The Redbirds are 3-6 overall, 1-5 in the KMAC and 18th in the region with 4.2833 points. But a win at Northmor could propel coach Ed Honabarger’s squad all the way to ninth depending on how others in the region fare.
Speaking of Region 27. Hillsdale has already clinched the No. 1 seed here.
The Falcons (9-0 overall, 6-0 in the Wayne County Athletic League) will remain No. 1 in Division VII, Region 27 no matter what happens at Norwayne this weekend.
Naturally, Trevor Cline’s club is focused on bringing home an undisputed WCAL championship when it travels to Creston to meet the Bobcats (7-2, 6-0). Yet with 18.3500 points, the defending state runners-up can’t be knocked out of the top spot in the region.
Crestline is in control of its playoff fate. The Bulldogs (5-4) are eighth in the region with 7.5606 points. A win at Lucas would lead only to a date in Week 11, where will be determined by others.
The Cubs (4-5) are 13th in the region at 6.8788 points. But a win won’t guarantee a postseason ticket. Nor would a loss lead to automatic elimination.
Danville (4-5, 2-4 in the KMAC) also has playoff aspirations. The Blue Devils are ninth in Division VII, Region 27 with 7.2222 points. Coach Matt Blum’s squad welcomes arch-rival East Knox (1-8, 1-5) for the annual Devil-Dog game.
But even with a win Danville may need some help to reach the postseason, or it could finish in the top five of the region and host a playoff game. That’s how unsettled things are in the Ohio high school football postseason scene.
Then there’s Buckeye Central at 3-6, but still in hunt, too. The Bucks are 14th in Division VII, Region 25 with 4.2475 points. Upper Sandusky (3-6) will visit New Washington on Friday night, but B.C. could still reach the playoffs, even with a loss.
The 72 largest schools are in Division I, while the remaining schools are divided equally in Divisions II through VII (approximately 106 schools in each division). Regional quarterfinal games on October 31 will include the No. 12 seed at the No. 5 seed, the No. 11 seed at the No. 6 seed, the No. 10 seed at the No. 7 seed and the No. 9 seed at the No. 8 seed. The top four seeds in each region will get a first-round bye.
