COLUMBUS — There are two weeks remaining in the Ohio high school football regular season.
Yet the Shelby Whippets already know they won’t be playing football in Week 11.
Coach Rob Mahaney’s undefeated club has clinched a home playoff game and a bye with a top-4 finish assured in Division IV, Region 14. The top 12 in each region will qualify for the playoffs, with the top four seeds getting a first-round bye.
The Ohio High School Athletic Association released the computer rankings on Tuesday showing Shelby (8-0 overall, 5-0 in the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference) with a whopping 23.8375 points.
The Whippets hammered Ontario 42-0 on Friday night and will host Pleasant (1-7, 0-5) this weekend. A victory would clinch at least a share of the league championship.
Galion is in the same region and has also already clinched a playoff spot. The Tigers (7-1, 4-1) are second only to Shelby (45-34 on Sept. 13), the lone team to topple them this year, in both the region (16.750 points) and the MOAC.
Galion is coming off a 36-6 beating of River Valley and travels to Marion Harding (3-6, 2-4) this week.
Clear Fork is also in Region 14, and slots in at 9th with 10.1625 points. Aaron Brokaw’s bunch controls its own destiny in the quest for a playoff spot.
The Colts will try to rebound from a stinging 13-10 overtime defeat to Highland. Clear Fork is 5-3 overall, 3-2 in the MOAC heading into Friday night’s clash at River Valley.
Lexington also falls into the category of teams that control their own destiny. The Minutemen are third in Division III, Region 10 with 15.4125 points.
Andrew Saris watched squad thump New Philadelphia 44-20 last week to keep pace for an Ohio Cardinal Conference championship clash in the season finale at home against Ashland. Before that, however, Lexington (7-1, 4-0) travels to Madison this week to battle the Rams (2-6).
Crestline (5-3) still has playoff aspirations despite last week’s 34-15 loss to Conotton Valley. The Bulldogs are 8th in Division VII, Region 27 with 7.1105 points.
Hastings Robinette’s team has a huge opportunity this week, with undefeated North Baltimore coming to town.
Colonel Crawford will try to regain its footing on Friday after falling 24-14 at nemesis Carey last week. The Eagles slipped to 7-1, 4-1 in the Northern 10.
C.C. dropped to fifth in Division VI, Region 23 with 12.5875 points. A trip to Upper Sandusky (3-5, 2-3) is on tap next.
Buckeye Central is fighting for a postseason berth, too. The Bucks are 3-5 and rated 10th in Division VII, Region 25 with 3.9893 points. B.C. travels to Wynford (2-6) on Friday night.
