MANSFIELD — Mansfield police are investigating several shots fired Friday night in the Municipal Parking lot downtown.
Police Chief Jason Bammann said Saturday morning no one was shot during the incident, which he said occurred around 1 a.m.
He said multiple shell casings were recovered from the parking lot at the corner of Fourth and Main streets. Crime scene tape was placed around the parking lot as officers investigated.
“We don’t have a motive and we are still trying to piece together what happened,” the chief said. “It had nothing do with the Final Friday (event in the nearby Brickyard, which ended around 10:30 p.m.)
“No one was hit, which leads me to believe someone was firing up into the air,” Bammann said.
He said people in the parking lot “hit the ground” when they heard the shots, which initially led police to suspect several people had been shot.
Police were given the description of a suspect fleeing on foot, but no arrests were made.
