BELLVILLE — Brittany Bechtel is playing chess and she has the most versatile piece on the board at her disposal.

Ashtyn Wine is Clear Fork’s queen.

Listed as a defender on the Colts’ roster, Wine is deployed wherever Bechtel needs her — and that suits the senior just fine.

“I go into the game and I’m like, ‘Whatever is best for my team,’ ” Wine said. “I’ll do whatever. It doesn’t matter.”

In Thursday’s 2-0 win over backyard rival Lexington, Wine was used exclusively as a defender. In the three games prior — shutout victories over Highland, Mansfield Senior and Shelby — Wine scored a combined seven goals and added three assists while operating in the midfield.

“I have puzzle pieces or chess pieces,” Bechtel said. “Most years I have personnel that play (certain spots). This personnel can go anywhere.”

The results are hard to argue with.

Clear Fork is 11-1-2 and atop the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference standings. Wine has 20 goals and 14 assists on the season, while senior forward Brinley Barnett has 21 goals and 12 assists. Junior forward Mya Perry had both goals in Thursday’s win over Lexington, giving her 12 on the season.

So what’s her favorite spot?

“I don’t know what I would pick,” Wine said. “I think I like offense more because I like to be up in the action.”

Bechtel coached Wine in youth soccer and had her play the sweeper spot. It was an imperfect marriage at first.

“It did not go well,” Wine said.

Bechtel agreed.

“When I had her when she was young, she always played sweeper for me and she was a hot mess,” said Bechtel, who earned her 250th coaching victory earlier this season. “When we would play big games I would say, ‘You’ve got to get yourself together.’ ”

Wine has always had a propensity for scoring no matter where she lined up. She scored nine goals and had 14 assists as a freshman and seven goals and three assists as a sophomore. Last year she scored nine goals and added four assists as the Colts reached the regional tournament for the first time since 2014.

What are expectations this fall?

“Last year we made it to regionals and it didn’t go so well. We lost to Ottawa-Glandorf,” Wine said. “This team has so much potential and we play so well together. I just expect us to go all the way.”
