Edgar “Ed” J. Mackey, age 92, resident of Shelby passed away Monday, September 1, 2025 at Ohio Health Shelby Hospital.
Born June 5, 1933 in Van, West Virginia to Edgar J. Mackey and India Mable (Tate) Mackey-Taylor, he had been a Shelby resident since 1981. After moving to Florida in the late 90’s for numerous years, he and his wife returned, and resided in Shelby for the last 20 years. A veteran of the United States Army, Ed served during the Korean War. He was then employed as an auto salesman with Graham Chevrolet for 21 years before returning to the Army. In 1988, he retired after 34 years of dedicated service to his country.
A life member of the American Legion O’Brian Post #326, where he had been past Commander, and a life member of the VFW and life member of the Disabled American Veterans.
In his younger years, Ed enjoyed playing golf and bowling. He was an avid sport fan, especially of The Ohio State Buckeyes and Cleveland Browns. In more recent years, Ed had built numerous doll houses for family and friends and worked many jigsaw puzzles. The most important activity for Ed was spending time with his family and always made sure to get all the family together.
Survivors include his wife Frances “Frannie” (Wallace) Mackey whom he wed February 17, 1977; five children: John Ross, of Shelby Connie (Gregg) Fazio of Shelby, Don (Kandi) Browning of Mansfield, James “Bo” Browning of Shelby and Chris (Josh) Ross-Francis of Plymouth, 11 grandchildren: Ryan (Kristen) Ross of Columbus, Tyler (Morgan) Ross of Shelby, Cara (Troy) Howard of Shelby, Nikki (Nick) Webster of Shelby, Donnie Browning of Columbus, Danielle (Ben) Browning-Vallandingham of Columbus, Larissa Browning of Tennessee, Kyle Stidham of Shelby, Kobi McKenzie of Shelby, Kaleb Browning of Mansfield and Austin (Jess) Ross of Shelby; 19 great grandchildren with one on the way; 1 great great grandson; a brother, John (Thelma) Parker of Butler; a sister, Lois(Paul) Harrington of Florida; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one son, Edgar J. Mackey, III ; brother Joe Taylor; sister Addie Crawford; brother-in-law Raymond Crawford and sister-in-law Rosie Taylor.
Friends may visit at the Barkdull Funeral Home & Crematory in Shelby Friday, September 5, 2025 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM. A funeral services will immediately follow at the funeral home at 2:00 PM. Ed’s nephew, Keith Stamper will officiate with interment in Oakland Cemetery.
