William “Bill” E. Fairchild, 81, of Ontario passed away on Wednesday August 13, 2025 at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital following a brief illness. He was born on June 10, 1944 in Waverly, Ohio to the late Edward & Bea (Viar) Fairchild and moved to Mansfield as a child.
Bill graduated from Madison High School in 1964, where he played football. He retired from AK Steel after 32 years of service and was a member of the United Steel Workers Union. He also played golf and was in the bowling league with AK Steel.
Bill attended Mansfield Free Will Baptist Church. He loved to watch westerns on TV, hunt and fish and also loved to watch The Ohio State Buckeyes and the Cleveland Browns. His proudest achievements were his son, Roger and the rest of his family. Bill was known for being very ornery. He loved to play jokes on his family and friends.
Bill is survived by his son, Roger (Susan) Fairchild; grandson, Nathan (Erin) Fairchild; step grandchildren, Jimmy Gibson and Amber Gibson; 8 great-grandchildren; sister, Pat Eldridge; the Lacey family and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Margaret (Frank) Mellot, Roger Fairchild, Evelyn (Frank) Hamilton and Don Fairchild; brother-in-law, Jim Eldridge and special friend, Maria Lacey.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday August 21, 2025 at 3:00PM at Ohio Cremation & Memorial Society, 9 Chambers Rd Mansfield, Ohio 44906. Pastor James Parker of Mansfield Free Will Baptist Church will officiate. Family and friends may call from 2:00-3:00 PM. A celebration of Bill’s life will also be held at 4:00PM on August 30, 2025 at the Mansfield Free Will Baptist Church, 998 Laver Rd., Mansfield, Ohio 44905.
