FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP — A truck driver was killed Friday afternoon in a three-vehicle accident at the intersection of Ohio 13/Ohio 96, according to the Mansfield Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred around 2 p.m. and shut down Ohio 13 in both directions for hours, according to troopers, but has since reopened.
The identity of the Kenworth dump truck driver was not released as of Saturday morning pending an investigation by the Richland County Coroner’s Office, the patrol said.
The crash involved a 2025 Chrysler Voyager minivan, a 2005 Kenworth T-800 dump truck and a 2019 Chevrolet Blazer, the patrol said.
James Massie, 81, of Gahanna, was driving eastbound on Ohio 96 in the minivan. The trucker was northbound on Ohio 13. Amber Boyd, 26, of Mansfield, was southbound on Ohio 13, according to the patrol.
Troopers said evidence showed Massie attempted to make a left turn onto Ohio 13 from Ohio 96 as the Kenworth truck approached the intersection.
The Kenworth collided with the passenger side of Massie’s Chrysler and continued northbound, ultimately striking the guardrail on the southbound side of Ohio 13 and overturning.
The driver of the Kenworth was partially ejected from the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries, the release said.
Boyd’s vehicle came to a stop north of the overturned Kenworth and sustained minor damages.
Massie was transported by Franklin Township EMS to OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital. Boyd did not report any injuries.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted by the Richland County Coroner’s Office, the Ohio Department of Transportation, Franklin Township fire and EMS and Ronk’s Towing.
The crash remains under investigation.
