MANSFIELD — A 27-year-old Shelby man was recently sentenced to nine to 13 1/2 years in prison for four charges, including two counts of first-degree felony rape.

Caleb Avants’ charges also included two counts of third-degree felony gross sexual imposition. He was sentenced on July 21 by Richland County Common Pleas Court Judge Brent Robinson.

Avants is now classified as a Tier III sex offender and must also serve up to five years of post-release control following his prison sentence. He was granted 292 days of jail credit for time already served at the Richland County Sheriff’s Office.

Richland County Prosecutor Jodie Schumacher previously said it was alleged that Avants engaged in sexual conduct and sexual contact with a juvenile over a 24-month period from Jan. 1, 2011, to Dec. 31, 2012.

During that time, the victim was younger than 13 years old.

Furthermore, Avants was also not an adult during the 24-month period, Schumacher said previously.
