MANSFIELD — The city of Mansfield is gearing up for an unforgettable day of connection, fun, and purpose as community members and the local police department unite for a one-of-a-kind event at Liberty Park.

This free, family-friendly gathering takes place on Saturday, Aug. 16 from 4 to 8 p.m., featuring food, games, music, and a spirited basketball game at 6 p.m. — Community vs. the MPD.

What began as one father’s mission to change the narrative has grown into a beloved local tradition. Founder Tra Wilson created CommUNITY Day last year in response to his son’s fear of law enforcement, shaped by a complicated past.

“Every time a cop car would drive by, he’d run inside. Because of my past, and seeing me in some trouble, his idea of the police was that they were the enemy,” says Wilson.

Tra’s own journey — from mistrust to friendship with local police, often forged through pickup games where he got to know many officers personally — sparked the idea to host a positive, community-first celebration centered around what helped grow his own relationship with law enforcement: basketball.

Joined by business professionals Chris Durbin and John Pavlansky, this year’s event promises even more fun and impact. Local favorite Kye “TalkToEm’” Boogie will host the festivities and emcee the highly anticipated basketball matchup.
