GALION — The Shawshank Big Band under the direction of Damian Boyd will perform a jazz concert on Sunday, Aug. 3 at 6 p.m. at the pavilion of the First United Church of Christ at 248 Harding Way West in Galion.
The concert is free to the public with a free will donation requested. The donations will be split by the Band and the Galion Kiwanis Club for their support of the Back Pack Food program.
The Shawshank Big Band is under the direction of noted area trombonist Damian Boyd and features talented musicians from throughout north central Ohio. The band focuses on the recreation of the big band sounds of the Swing Era, with some modern jazz.
This concert will feature a breezy summer take on jazz music and great jazz improvisation.
The Kiwanis Club of Galion has as its mission to support children in the community. The Back Pack program is a service to those students in need of food assistance.
Over 160 Galion students receive food aid from the program that is coordinated by Community Action. The Kiwanis Club is stepping up to make sure no child is missed by this program.
The First United Church of Christ hosts concerts by the Shawshank Band throughout the year as part of their community outreach mission. The Shawshank Big Band thanks the church for the use of this great venue.
Concert goers are asked to bring lawn chairs for this outside concert. The site is handicap accessible and has limited shade.
