MANSFIELD — North central Ohio’s premier summer youth swimming conferences joined forces Saturday morning.

Four members of the Greater Mansfield Aquatic Conference and four All Summer Aquatic Conference teams gathered at the Woodland Club for the first Woodland Eels Red, White and Blue Invitational.

Host Woodland, Walnut Hills, Ashland and Colonel Crawford represented the GMAC. Crestline, Willard, Marion and Mount Gilead carried the banner for the ASAC.

Parking was at a premium around the Andover Road facility as nearly 200 swimmers made their way to town. The start of the event was delayed for about an hour as storms rolled through the area, but the rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of meet officials.

“We wanted to do something to highlight the wonderful things we have going on at the Woodland Club and within the swimming program,” Woodland coach Matt Wade said. “We were very excited to bring in swimmers from eight different teams across the area for a fun morning of good competition.

“We hope that everyone enjoyed their experience at Woodland.”

The red, white and blue theme in honor of the upcoming July Fourth holiday was the brainchild of Woodland team representative Allison Weeks. Winners of the “Firewords Events” were awarded Pop Rocks candy.

“We are so excited to host our invitational,” Weeks said. “In my 23 years with Woodland swim team, this is our first big meet.

“Our coaches and families as well as members are making it possible. We have great support.”

Host Woodland won both the boys and girls team titles. The boys finished with 862 points, just ahead of rival and runner-up Walnut Hills (854). The Woodland girls won with 962 points. Walnut Hills (577.5) was second.
