COLUMBUS — Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost issued a statement supporting Friday’s U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Trump v. CASA.

In a 6-3 vote, the Court’s decision essentially curtailed the power of individual district court judges to issue injunctions blocking federal government policies nationwide.

The ruling is perceived as a major win for President Trump, as it limits judges’ ability to block his birthright citizenship order nationwide.

“The Supreme Court has made clear that Congress has not authorized individual judges to supervise the duly elected president and the Executive Branch,” Yost said. “Today’s ruling rejects the novel invention of the ‘universal injunction,’ which, the Supreme Court explains, ‘was conspicuously nonexistent for most of our Nation’s history.’ “

Democratically enacted laws cannot be put on hold by judges who think they are kings. Americans’ freedom depends on each part of the government staying in its lane.

The ruling Friday came in connection with three lawsuits in which district court judges granted nationwide injunctions against an executive order that President Trump signed in January.

The executive order seeks to deny American citizenship to children born in the U.S. to foreigners on short-term visas and those without legal status.

“Democratically enacted laws cannot be put on hold by judges who think they are kings,” Yost said. “Americans’ freedom depends on each part of the government staying in its lane.

“Legislatures make laws, executive officials enforce them, and courts resolve cases. The power of a court is only the power to offer relief equal to the injury proved by those parties.”
