MANSFIELD — What do we need from men right now? And how do we teach boys to grow into that?
In Part II of our Better Together conversation with Jay Allred and Colton Penwell, the discussion shifts from reflection to action.
Co-hosts Brittany Schock and Maddie Penwell ask the two local dads to consider not just where masculinity has failed — but what a better version could look like.
The group talks about the “loneliness epidemic” among men, how emotional distance is often taught from a young age and why friendship between men tends to be shallow unless it’s intentional.
Allred and Penwell both said it can be hard it can be to ask for help, but also why they’ve learned to do it anyway.
“There’s not a lot of permission given to men to feel complicated things in public,” Colton Penwell said.
They also reflect on the responsibility of raising the next generation — and how that starts with modeling vulnerability, emotional intelligence, and accountability at home.
This is an episode about hope. It’s about what happens when men stay in the conversation, when they show up for their partners and when they ask their friends real questions instead of just cracking a beer and moving on.
The two men don’t claim to have all the answers — but they’re both committed to doing the work.
