MANSFIELD — What does it mean to be a man today? And how much of that was shaped by expectation rather than intention?
In this episode of Better Together, co-hosts Brittany Schock and Maddie Penwell are joined by two voices familiar to the Richland County community — Jay Allred, CEO of Source Media Properties, and Colton Penwell, teacher at Pioneer Career and Technology Center.
Together, they open up about fatherhood, masculinity, and how men are rewriting the scripts they were handed.
The conversation is both hilarious and deeply honest — exploring how Jay’s experience raising two adult daughters differs from Colton’s life with two young boys, and what it looks like to share emotional labor in a way that actually feels equal.
They talk about what they learned from the men who raised them, how they’re working to break cycles, and why friendship, vulnerability, and self-reflection are essential ingredients in becoming who they want to be — not just as partners and parents, but as people.
“There’s some guilt that comes with realizing how much you didn’t understand about what your partner was carrying,” said Colton.
This is Part I of a two-part conversation. In next week’s episode, the group dives even deeper into male friendship, the loneliness epidemic, and how we build a culture where men are allowed — and expected — to show up differently.
Better Together is a show within the Source Daily podcast and available wherever you listen. New episodes drop every Thursday.
