BELLVILLE: Florence E. Hunt of Bellville passed away peacefully Thursday afternoon, June 5, 2025 with her family by her side. She was 97.
Florence now walks and talks with her Savior Jesus Christ.
Born Florence Eva Fry on April 21, 1928 to Lee M. and Thelma M. (Ruckman) Fry in Bellville, she was named for both of her grandmas and was the eldest of four children.
She grew up a farm girl, driving the horses when she was about five years-old. She went to a country school on Honeycreek Road during her early school years and later was a Bellville Blue Jay. She graduated from high school in 1946.
Florence went on to attend the Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in
Parkersburg, West Virginia. She graduated in 1952 as a registered nurse and began a career
which would reach into the following four decades. Retiring professionally from nursing in
1998, she had worked in both hospital and nursing home settings, including having served as the Director of Nursing of the Hillcrest Nursing Home in Fredericktown, Ohio for eighteen years.
While in Washington D.C. for part of her nurse’s training, Florence met a Marine named James Everett Hunt in a drugstore on Pennsylvania Avenue. They were married on her birthday in 1951 and remained married until his death in 1997. They had three sons and one daughter together.
Florence dearly enjoyed being a nurse, but she was first and foremost a mom and a grandma.
She will be most remembered by her family simply as Mom and MaMa. Feisty at times and always a hard worker, she raised her family with love and a sense of humor. If there was a right way to do something, that’s the way Mom (MaMa) wanted it done.
Florence took care of her family. Her homemade rolls, Christmas punch, and homemade noodles are just a few of the many dishes she was known for. She also was skilled as a seamstress, making clothes and quilts and doilies over the years. She recognized the value of family genealogy and record keeping and was good at both. Her love of flowers and gardening remained with her throughout her lifetime. And she always enjoyed having company over and would encourage visitors to just make themselves at home.
Florence was a member of the Ankenytown Grace Brethren Church for many years.
She is survived by her two sons, James C. Hunt and Bruce L. Hunt, both of Bellville; her
daughter-in-law, Mary E. Hunt of Fredericktown; her son-in-law, Charles W. Robbins of
Fredericktown; twelve grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; several nieces and
nephews; and many more who loved her as a mom or grandma.
In addition to her parents and husband, Florence was preceded in death by her daughter, Susan L. Robbins; her son, Matt E. Hunt; her sister, Barbara A. Rehmert; her brother, James F. Fry; and her sister, Mary Lee Kilgore.
Friends may call Thursday, June 12, 2025 from 10 am to 11:30 am in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home where the funeral service will follow at 11:30. Rev. Gary Kochheiser will officiate and burial will follow in Bellville Cemetery.
