Marie McCalla, of Galion, Ohio, passed away peacefully in her home on May 22, 2025 following a brave and valiant 5 year battle with colon cancer. Her daughter Tracy remained at her side and their bond as mother and daughter held strong till the very end along with unrelenting support from her son-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and sisters. She was 80 years old.
She was born on October 8, 1944 in Baltimore, Maryland to the late Floyd and Evelyn (Smith) Tackett. On March 25, 1964 Marie married the love of her life, Phillip McCalla, in Bell County, Texas. Together they shared 46 wonderful years of marriage together until his passing in 2010, now they are reunited together again.
Marie dedicated her life to caring for those she loved. She supported her husband through critical health challenges, provided end-of-life care for family members in their homes, and lovingly cared for her grandchildren on a daily basis. Known for her tireless energy, Marie could often be found cleaning—even when told not to—baking delicious treats, decorating for holidays, and delighting in crafts and legos with her grandchildren and sisters. A devoted Elvis Presley fan, she often filled her home with his music. Marie’s greatest pride and joy came from her family. She cherished her roles as a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, great-aunt, and friend. Her happiest moments were spent surrounded by family, from sleepovers with her great-grandchildren to dinners out with loved ones, sister trips, and special times with her daughters. Marie’s love, care, and unwavering dedication to her family will forever be remembered.
Marie held a special place in the heart of her grandson Jason, who described her as a pivotal figure in his life, offering love and support from his infancy into adulthood. She became like a second mother to him and played a profound role in his journey, including enabling him to pursue his education and achieve his dreams. Her unwavering care and devotion to Jason and his children left an indelible mark on their lives. Jason expressed his deep gratitude and love, vowing to carry her memory with him always.
She is survived by her daughters Tracy (Dave) Boyer and Teresa (Victor) Herrera, grandchildren Jason (Rachele) Boyer, Heather Boyer, Taehlr (Steven) Bell, and Parker Samples, great-grandchildren Aubrey Boyer, Emma Boyer, Sophia Boyer, Jackson Boyer, and Eva Muller, siblings Mike (Donna) Tackett, Terry Tackett, Jackie Schubert, and Patty Seevers, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Marie is preceded in death by her parents and brother Floyd “PeeWee” Tackett.
A Celebration of Life Lunch will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2025 at the American Legion in Galion at 1 pm.
