SHELBY — Summer Reading is getting ready to start at the Marvin Memorial Library.

The Kick-Off Party is Saturday, May 31 starting at 11 a.m. at the Kerr Garden Room where there will be loads of fun activities including a Live Show with magician Michael Mage. 

The library will also have:

*Nature BINGO 

*A Scavenger Hunt

*Crafts (including but not limited to)

  • Coloring Pages 
  • Design your own bookmark 
  • Design your own phone case backgrounds 
  • Butterfly Suncatchers 

*Door Prizes for each age group 

*A magic-themed door prize at the Live Magician Show 

All ages are welcome to help us “Color Our World” with a variety of activities and events throughout the summer.

Sign up will be online, which you may do at home or at the library. We have planned a variety of exciting programs and events.

Prize slips for weekly and grand prizes are earned by checking out materials, attending events, and completing activities such as a coloring contest and game boards. Story times for a variety of age groups will be offered.

New this year will be Lap Sit Story Time for ages 0-2 and Story Time at the Farmer’s Market on select Saturdays.

“We’ll once again have Story Time for ages 2-5, Book & Craft for grades K-3, and Tween Group for grades 4-6. K-6th grade will be able to attend Science Nights every Monday where they’ll learn about the natural world, develop observational journals, and contribute to real scientific studies through Citizen Science,” the library stated.

“We’ll offer a variety of Family programs including Messy Art Nights, Family Book Club, Family Game Nights, and Book Bingo. Special guests will include Fiona the Hippo Illustrator, Richard Cowdrey, Stellar Robotics, Armstrong Air & Space Museum and the Ohio School of Falconry.”

Teens will get creative on Mondays during the Crafternoon program and have a movie day every Friday. They will be able to earn prize slips by participating in a writing competition, and attending other teen programs like Book Club, Science Night, The Art of Food, Game Night or Art Trivia Night.

Adults will be able to attend history programs which include The History of Travel in America, The History of Malabar Farm, and Spokes & Floats: The History of the Shelby Bicycle (free ice cream floats will be served).  Also included in the adult summer reading lineup is a Music Trivia Night with DJ Mr. Ed with pizza courtesy of the Friends of the Library, a Wine Glass Painting Class, and a Pottery Class.

New this year for adults is the Walking Club which will be at 10 a.m. every Wednesday.

Other special events will include a Tiny Art Show, an Interactive Viewing of The Wizard of Oz, and a Virtual Aquarium Tour with The Greater Cleveland Aquarium, where we’ll give away two tickets to see the Aquarium in person.

Book Clubs and Knotty Knitters will continue at their regular times throughout Summer Reading.

“We’ll cap off the Summer fun with a huge Summer Reading Block Party which will include a Cruise-In, music, street magic, games and door prizes,” the library stated.

Sponsored by Paul’s Drive In, Roselawn Miniature Golf, Advance Auto Parts, O’Reilly’s Auto Parts, and AutoZone. Three winners will get prizes from the Cruise-In entries.
