Dr. John R. Heringhaus, a longtime resident of Mansfield, peacefully passed away on May 20, 2025. He was born in Mansfield on March 4, 1937, to Helen and F.J. Heringhaus. During World War II, the family lived in Alamogordo, New Mexico, before returning to Mansfield.

John graduated from St. Peter’s High School, attended the University of Notre Dame, and earned his degree from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. He began his dental career in Xenia, Ohio, before relocating his practice to Mansfield, where he served the community for many years.

A devoted member of the St. Peter’s Parish, John was deeply involved in the school and church community—as a parishioner, booster, and longtime supporter of their athletic programs. He was fondly known as “the voice of the Spartans,” serving as the P.A. announcer for both boys’ and girls’ basketball games for many years and as a lector for church masses.

Rosie, as he was known to his friends, was an avid runner and triathlete, and he took great pride in staying active throughout his life. One of his greatest joys was following the academic, athletic, and personal pursuits of his children and grandchildren. Conversations with him included significant amounts of detail (it was Jim Laughlin who blocked the punt versus Michigan in 1979). Well ahead of Waze, he could provide you with alternate routes for any detour, mostly involving Old Bowman Street Road. Growing up with him also required guessing the listed temperature on the bank sign on Lexington Avenue with a professional athlete’s jersey number.

He is survived by his wife of over 66 years, Terry Heringhaus; his children, Dr. Thomas (Theresa) Heringhaus, David (Lynne) Heringhaus, Amy (Ted) Togliatti, and Sarah (Jeff) Solin; eleven grandchildren, Christopher, Michael, Julia, Sam, Sammi B, Grace, Ellie, Olivia, Teddy, Sunshine, and Milo; son-in-law, Horacio Argeles, and his sister, Jeanie Cindric.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Stephen John Heringhaus; daughter, Jill Mary Argeles; and sister, Judith McConnell.

The Heringhaus family would like to thank Tamara Williamson and her team for their care and assistance over the last several months.

Calling hours will take place Friday, May 23, 2025 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Herlihy Funeral Home, 173 Park Avenue West, Mansfield. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30am on Saturday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 60 S. Mulberry Street. Burial will follow at Prince of Peace Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Msgr. Edward Dunn Foundation through St. Peter’s or to the Mansfield Playhouse, 95 E Third Street in Mansfield, as part of their current capital campaign.
