Dale Duane Black, age 98, of Butler, passed away peacefully on Wednesday May 7, 2025 at the Kingston of Ashland. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend, and proud American, he lived a full life marked by faith, service, hard work, and joyful song.
The son of Harley and Nina (Fike) Black, Dale was born January 24, 1927, at home in Butler, Ohio Dale grew up with a strong sense of community and responsibility. After graduating from Butler High School in 1944, he answered the call to serve his country as a proud U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Serving from 1950 – 1952, while stationed abroad, Dale anticipated “mail days” with the hopes of receiving letters written by the love of his life, Sue Ann Ogier. Dale earned the rank of Corporal and was honorably discharged. Following his military service, Dale and Sue Ann were married December 23, 1956.
Dale was a dedicated and faithful employee of Mansfield Plumbing Products, where he was known for his reliability and kind demeanor. Working in the shipping department, he retired in 1988 after 30 years.
A man of deep faith, Dale never missed a Sunday at church…nor did his family. The Black’s attended church on Sunday’s, Wednesday evenings and even worshiped while on family vacations! Dale’s commitment to the Lord was evident in his words and actions. He attended Grace Fellowship Church, where he was not only a devoted member but also a passionate singer. He loved to lift his voice in worship and special performances. His love for music extended beyond the pews—he delighted in performing in community musicals and could always be counted on to bring life and laughter to the stage.
Dale also had a lifelong love of travel and adventure. Whether exploring the beauty of the American countryside, visiting historic landmarks, or setting out on bus trips with family and friends, Dale found joy in discovering new places and sharing those moments with the people he loved most. He was so proud of his Honor Flight opportunity. A day recognized for his service to his country spent at Washington D.C.
His charm remained strong as he was recently crowned Ashland County Fair Senior King for 2024. Those who knew Dale will remember his warm smile, quick wit, and joyful spirit. He had a remarkable sense of humor and a gift for making people feel welcome and loved. His presence brightened every room, and his stories and laughter will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
He is survived by his children Bradley (Anne) Black of Westerville, Bethany Foltz of Loudonville, and Belinda (Tom) Young of Loudonville; grandchildren Benjamin Black (Emily Rammage), Alicia (Bryan) Haslip, Haley (Matthew) Lustig, Corey Black, Andria Foltz (Trent Wahl), Austin (Katie) Black, Heather (Mitchell) Art; great grandson Ethan Haslip and two great grandchildren on the way; sister-in-law Gwyenna (Charles) Lifer; special cousin Richard “Dick” Wells; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Along with his Parents he was preceded in death by his loving wife Sue Ann Black and brother Lynn Leroy “Roy” (Lois) Black.
Friends and family are invited to gather for calling hours on Thursday May 15, 2025 from 10 am – 11 am at the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home where funeral services honoring Dale’s life will begin at 11 am. Pastor John Temple will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow at Bunkerhill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Butler Adult Life Center, Butler Historical Society or the Bellville Historical society.
