Left-handed pitcher fires a pitch

SHELBY — Travis Slone fired a five-inning no-hitter and Shelby cruised to a run rule-shortened 11-0 win over Ontario in Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference action Wednesday at Shelby.

A left-hander, Slone walked one and struck out four. He threw 66 pitches, 41 for strikes.

The Whippets (11-9, 4-7) gave Slone all the support he would need in the home half of the first, scoring a pair of runs. The first scored on Brady Bowman’s infield single and the second on a wild pitch.

Shelby added a run in the second. Brock Fisher drew a leadoff walk and came around to score on Nic Eyster’s infield single.

The Whippets blew it open in the fourth, scoring eight runs on four hits and two Ontario errors. Shelby sent 12 men to the plate in the frame.

Eyster led the Whippets with a pair of hits. He scored twice and knocked in two. Quinton Albert singled and scored twice while Fisher singled and scored three runs.

Jaren Holden took the loss for Ontario (8-9, 6-5). He gave up three hits and struck out three in three innings.

The teams will complete the home-and-home series Thursday at Shelby.
