LUCAS — The Cubs are flying high.
After dropping their first two games of the season, Lucas has won five in a row and sits atop the Mid-Buckeye Conference standings.
Lucas is 3-0 in MBC play after this week’s sweep of Mansfield Christian. Kidron Central Christian swept Crestline this week and is 2-0.
Lucas pitcher Brady Anschutz has been virtually unhittable this spring. He’s 3-1 with 33 strikeouts and has yet to give up an earned run in 17.2 innings pitched. Anschutz surrendered one hit and struck out 10 in Monday’s run rule-shortened 12-0 win at Mansfield Christian.
Lucas and KCC meet in a home-and-home next week that will likely determine the MBC championship. The Cubs host the Comets on Monday before visiting Kidron on Tuesday.
Ohio Cardinal Conference
There’s a logjam at the top of the Ohio Cardinal Conference standings.
Four of the seven OCC teams are within a game of each other in the early going.
Lexington (3-0) and New Philadelphia (2-0) share the driver’s seat, while Wooster (3-1) and Ashland (2-1) are knocking on the door. West Holmes (3-2) threw its hat in the ring Tuesday with an upset of the Generals.
Lexington’s Cole Eichorn is one of the top hitters in the OCC. He’s batting .455 with three doubles and nine runs batted in. Markale Martin is 3-0 with a 2.88 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 17 innings for the Minutemen.
Mansfield Senior and Madison are both searching for their first OCC wins. The Tygers are 0-5 in OCC play, while the Rams are 0-4.
Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference
The chase for the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference crown is every bit as jumbled as the OCC race.
Highland is 3-0, while Ontario and Galion are 3-1. Marion Harding is 3-2 and Clear Fork is 2-2.
Ontario’s Jaren Holden leads the MOAC in hitting at .565. He’s knocked in eight runs.
The Warriors and Galion were postponed Tuesday, but will play Wednesday and Thursday in a home-and-home series.
Shelby is still looking for its first OCC win. The Whippets are 0-4.
Firelands Conference
The Firelands Conference chase got a little more interesting Tuesday.
Western Reserve beat St. Paul 13-10. It was the Flyers’ first conference loss.
St. Paul and South Central are tied atop the standings at 3-1. The Trojans swept Crestview this week, winning both games in extra innings.
Plymouth is a game back at 2-2. Crestview is 1-3.
