ASHLAND — Chase Carter is making the most of his senior season.
A 2021 Lexington High School graduate, Carter has emerged as the closer of Ashland University’s ultra-successful baseball team. The Eagles are 23-8 after a four-game Great Midwest Athletic Conference sweep of Findlay over the weekend.
A hard-throwing right-hander, Carter is 3-1 with six saves and a 0.38 earned run average in 14 appearances. He has struck out 24 in 24 innings of work.
Carter made eight appearances last spring. He gave up four earned runs in 8.1 innings pitched.
Carter is just one of the local high school graduates performing well in college sports this spring. Here is an update on some others:
• D.J. Duncan opened his senior campaign in style. A St. Peter’s grad and Ashland University hurdler, Duncan won the 110-meter hurdles at the season-opening Yellow Jacket Collegiate Open at Cedarville. His time of 13.96 seconds was a provisional qualifying time toward the Division II outdoor national meet. Duncan, a former state champ for St. Peter’s, qualified for the national meets in the 110s last spring.
• Shelby’s Marshall Shepherd has established himself as a reliever in the Walsh University bullpen. A junior right-hander, Shepherd has worked 9.2 inning across eight appearances for the Cavaliers (7-18). He’s allowed seven earned runs and struck out eight.
• Autumn Bailey is putting the finishing touches on a productive Division I softball career at the University of Akron. The Crestview product is hitting .300 in limited action for the Zips (19-18). Bailey has appeared in 99 games in her four seasons. She appeared in 35 games last spring, batting .266 with 18 runs and 12 runs batted in. As a sophomore she hit .320 in 27 games.
• Lexington product Cole Pauley has found his place with the Miami (Ohio) baseball program. The junior right-hander has made three appearances out of the bullpen for the Redhawks (17-14). Pauley started his career at Ohio State before transferring to Miami for the 2024 season. He didn’t see any action last spring while recovering from an elbow injury.
• Madison grad Nevaeh Lewis had a sensational outdoor debut as a freshman sprinter for the Tiffin women’s track team. Lewis swept the 100-meter and 200-meter dash at the Tiffleberg Open at Heidelberg. Lewis won the 100 in 11.99 and took the 200 in 24.30. Lewis followed that up with a win in the 100 at Ohio University’s Cherry Blossom Invitational in Athens over the weekend. She won in 11.82.
