SHELBY — The new Dollar Tree in Shelby could be open in a couple of weeks.
According to Jessica Gribben, economic development manager for Shelby and northern Richland County, the discount store is projected to open April 17.
Noticeable changes have been ongoing at the 11 Mansfield Ave. storefront, including updated signage and branding added to the building’s exterior.
Plans for a slight interior remodel for registers and storage were also submitted last year, Gribben said in December 2024.
According to the Richland County Auditor’s website, Dollar Tree purchased the former Rite Aid building on the corner of Mansfield Avenue and East Main Street in Shelby for $360,000 on Oct. 22.
Shelby’s Rite Aid permanently closed its doors around September 2024 — a result of the drug store chain closing 286 of its locations in Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania.

Dollar Tree and Family Dollar
Dollar Tree’s 11 Mansfield Ave. location is situated 528 feet north of the Family Dollar storefront at 17 Mansfield Ave.
In 2015, Dollar Tree, Inc. acquired Family Dollar, according to its website. But the discount store company recently sold the Family Dollar chain for $1 billion “to a pair of private equity firms,” according to the Associated Press.
Despite their close proximity, it’s unlikely Family Dollar will be impacted by the addition of Dollar Tree.
“I have no reason to believe that they (Family Dollar) would close with this opening,” Gribben said previously. “And they offer similar but different products.
“(Dollar Tree) will contribute to the area’s economic activity, creating jobs. We look forward to welcoming Dollar Tree,” she said.
