MANSFIELD — The Mansfield City School next two regular board of education meetings will be on April 8 and 22.

The board typically meets on the first and third Tuesday of the month at 5:30 p.m. at the Raemelton Administration Building (856 W. Cook Road.)

A district official said the change was due to spring break, which occurred the last week of March.

What is a school board?

School board members are the community’s elected representatives. District expenditures, contracts, policies and procedures ultimately require their approval. They also hire and evaluate the school district’s superintendent and treasurer.

According to the Ohio School Board Association, it is not the job of board members to oversee the day-to-day operations of a school district or become involved in hiring decisions beyond the superintendent and treasurer.

The board’s regular meeting schedule, approved at its organizational meeting in January, is available on the board’s homepage.

Boards may also call special meetings or emergency meetings. Special meetings must be called for a specific purpose and only topics related to the stated purpose can be discussed, according to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office.

Emergency meetings are special meetings that are needed because a situation requires immediate action. As with special meetings, only topics related to the stated purpose of the meeting can be discussed.

How do I see a meeting agenda or speak at a meeting?

Want to see what the board will discuss or has discussed at a previous meeting? Meeting agendas and minutes are available on the board’s website.

The board also has a period for public comment during regular aboard meeting.

Those who wish to speak at a school board meeting should show up a few minutes early, fill out a one-page form and hand it to the treasurer before the meeting begins.

Members of the public who wish to speak to the board do so during the public participation portion of the meeting. Public participation is available at every regular board meeting, per school board policy.

Also per board policy, members of the public may only speak on matters related to an item on the board’s agenda. Members of the public who wish to speak must state their name and address before they begin.

Speakers are limited to four minutes, although the board president may offer to extend their time.
