Mitzi (Cox) Johnson age 84, resident of Shelby, passed away Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Born July 12, 1940, in Calvin, Kentucky to Willis W. and Cleo (Green) Cox, she had been a Shelby resident since 1966. She graduated from Cumberland High School in Cumberland, Kentucky in 1957 then earned her bachelor’s degree from Cumberland College in Williamsburg, Kentucky and later her master’s degree from Ashland University. Mitzi worked as a schoolteacher for 38 years, serving districts throughout Kentucky and Southern Ohio finally retiring from Shelby City Schools in 1998. She enjoyed reading and textile crafts including sewing, quilting, and crocheting. Most importantly, however, Mitzi loved to spend time with her family and friends.
Survivors include her children, Rhonda Dickerson of Willard, OH, Wesley (Kim) Johnson of McKinney, TX, and Kelli (John) Reimer of Tiro, OH; four grandchildren, Kevin, Jack and Ben Johnson and Glen Travis; two great-grandchildren Keegan and Kaydence Johnson; brother, Jerry (Joan) Cox of Grand Island, FL; sister, Sue (Bruce) Cole of Shepherdsville, KY; sister-in-law Maureen Cox of Olympia, WA and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
In addition to her parents, Mitzi was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Johnson, in 2019, granddaughter, Rachel Johnson; brother, Larry Cox, and son-in-law, Terry Dickerson.
Friends may visit at the Barkdull Funeral Home & Crematory in Shelby Tuesday, February 25, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM. A memorial service will immediately follow at 5:00 PM with Mitzi’s sister and brother-in-law, Reverends Sue and Bruce Cole, officiating. A private burial will take place at Oakland Cemetery in Shelby at a later date.
In place of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shelby High School, in the care of the Food Service Department, at 109 W. Smiley Ave. Shelby, OH 44875, to help offset the student lunch debt.
