BELLVILLE: Obed James Snelson, Jr., age 99, of Bellville passed away Tuesday, February 4, 2025 in The Waterford of Mansfield.

He was born March 9, 1925 in Elkins, WV to the late Obed and Marie (Channell) Snelson and graduated from Elkins High School in 1943.

Obed served in the Marines during WW II aboard the USS Quincy on the D-Day invasion, and transported president Roosevelt to the Yalta Conference. He was honorably discharged in December of 1945.

On February 1, 1946 he married Marilyn Winn who preceded him in death in 2002. Together they raised three children.

Obed worked as a supervisor in metal assembly at General Motors until retirement in 2008.
He was a faithful member of New Life Church of Christ and was active with the Owls Senior Church Group. He was a member of the Bellville American Legion and was an avid traveler seeing nearly all of the 50 U.S. States. Obed also served as a volunteer and later a naturalist at Malabar Farm. He took pride in growing his blueberries, raspberries and rhubarb which he made into the best pies.

Obed is survived by his children James (Chengxia) Snelson, Dennis (Barbara) Snelson and Anita Metheney, grandchildren Alana Gillson, Alyssa Snelson, Angie Snelson, Mark (Kristen) Snelson, Lynette (Mike) Heniff; and five great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Marilyn, second wife Marjorie, grandson Philip Snelson, siblings Reta Snelson and Glen Snelson, son-in-law Tommy Metheney.

The funeral service in honor of Obed James Snelson, Jr. will be held Monday, February 10, 2025 at 12 pm in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home, friends may visit the family the hour prior to the service. Obed will be interred at Bellville Cemetery.

Donations in honor of Obed may be made to the Bellville-Jefferson Township Rescue Squad or Southern Care Hospice.
