Ruth “Ann” Bishop, 95, of Mansfield, OH, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was welcomed into heaven by her parents, her devoted husband Walter Louis Bishop, and her three siblings who preceded her in death.
Born on January 8, 1930, in Marion, OH, Ann was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Florence McGinnis. She graduated from Marion Catholic High School in 1948, went on to earn a Nursing degree from Mt. St. Joseph’s College and Good Samaritan’s Hospital in 1953, and completed her Nurse Practitioner Training at The Ohio State University in 1977.
Ann married Walter Louis Bishop on July 16, 1955, at St. Mary’s Church in Marion, OH. Her nursing career spanned many years in various roles, including Registered Nursing at Dr. Adair’s office, Mansfield OBGYN, Raintree, Private Duty, and the Richland County Volunteer Respite Program.
A dedicated member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Mansfield, Ann played an active role in several ministries, including Stephen Ministries, St. Vincent de Paul, and the Catholic Women’s Club. She volunteered for 30 years with The National Alzheimer’s Association, earning numerous awards for her contributions, including the Volunteer of the Year Award, the Quality of Care Award from Pfizer, Alzheimer’s Advocate Award, and the Mansfield Sertoma Club “Service to Mankind Award,”. She also received the Distinguished Leaders in Healthcare Award from the Visiting Nurses Association, the Papal Award for Volunteerism with Catholic Charities, the First Ladies Award for Elder Caregiver, induction into St. Peter’s Hall of Fame and was a nominee for the Caregiver of the Year Award in the State of Ohio.
Ann had a passion for life, enjoying time by the water, boating, and being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved reading, doing puzzles, baking, and was an avid sports fan, cheering for the Cleveland Indians, Browns, Cavaliers, and The Ohio State Buckeyes. She also enjoyed watching all of her family playing all types of sports, cheering them on also. Ann cherished playing cards with her family and caregivers, creating joyful memories that will be treasured.
Ann is survived by her seven children: David (Geena) Bishop, Cindy (Ken) Hodges, Patty (Brad) Harrington, Bill (Cassi) Bishop, Judy Miller, Jim (Sandy) Bishop, Cathy (Steve) Butcher; 1 Sister, Marilyn (Bob) Smith , 17 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; countless nieces and nephews, all of who loved her very much.
Visitation will be held at Herlihy Funeral Home, 173 Park Avenue West, on Wednesday from 4 – 7pm with a vigil prayer service at 7:00pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:00am at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 60 S. Mulberry Street. Burial will follow in Mansfield Catholic Cemetery.
