CANAL WINCHESTER — Mansfield Senior’s defense was at its best on Saturday afternoon during the Harvest Prep New Year Bash.
The Tygers limited Toledo’s Maumee Valley Country Day squad to just two points in the second period while rolling to a convincing, 61-42 decision.
Senior High unleashed a balanced scoring attack with nine players contributing to the offense.
Freshman Kaylen Brooks led the way with 14 points and senior Kyevi Roane collected 10. D’Vontae Johnson posted nine points, while Jahmere Pearson and Rashad Reed Jr. each had seven.
Keeran Stokes booked 14 points to spearhead the Hawks’ offense, and Ty Lewis had 10.
Coach Marquis Sykes’ squad edged in front 19-18 after the first period, and owned a 25-20 halftime advantage.
Senior High dominated the second half. After Maumee Valley scored the first six points of the third period to edge in front 26-25, the Tygers ripped off a 13-2 burst to move on top 38-28 after three quarters.
Mansfield Senior left no doubt by racking up a 23-14 scoring edge in the final eight minutes.
The Tygers improved to 7-1 on the season and will host West Holmes on Tuesday at Pete Henry Gym.
The Hawks fell to 5-5 and will be home against Northwood next Saturday.
