James I. “Jim” Winningham, age 80, of Shelby, died Sunday, December 22, 2024 at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.
Jim was born September 20, 1944 in Tallassee, AL to James E. and Ruth A. (Newman) Winningham. He graduated from Auburn High School in Auburn, AL and attended Auburn University from where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering.
Planes, flying, and anything to do with them always piqued Jim’s interest. A pilot himself, Jim had also enjoyed flying model RC airplanes. A jack of all trades, Jim was a “walking Google” and paid close attention to a variety of topics. He had a love for music, both listening and creating, and especially enjoyed listening to bluegrass and traditional southern gospel. A self-taught pianist and harmonica player, Jim would often play along to songs he was listening to. Additionally, he enjoyed fishing.
Jim is survived by his children: Tim Winningham of Lexington, Tom Winningham of Columbus, Deanna (Nick) Bailey of Shelby, Vronda Brown of Shelby, Elizabeth Stigall of Shelby, Jeremiah Sexton of Plymouth, Steven (Pat) Sexton of Columbus; and numerous grandchildren, including his grandsons: Timo and Tanner Winningham. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his first wife, Lola Kay (Waldruff) Winningham, and second wife, Sally F. (Shepherd) Winningham.
