MANSFIELD — Cindy Baker said the best part of her job is seeing customers find their perfect wig or accessory.

“Putting something on that makes you feel beautiful and comfortable just lifts everything about you,” the owner of Downtown Wigs & Fashion said.

“A lot of our customers are women with cancer, so finding something that makes them feel beautiful and more like themselves is a great thing.”

Downtown Wigs is located at 43 N. Main St. next door to Athena Greek Restaurant. Customers can stop in or find the store on Facebook and via phone at 419-526-4267.

The store is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday–Friday and 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

In her new space for Downtown Wigs & Fashion, Baker said the Main Street shop floor has much more space than her previous location on Walnut Street. The owner celebrated the business’ grand reopening on Thursday with her family members and elected officials.

Commissioner Tony Vero commended Baker on her Main Street location.

“You have a very successful downtown business, and thank you for staying in Mansfield when you could have moved elsewhere,” he said. “We wish you nothing but the best in this location.”

Baker thanked her husband Dennis, her church family and grant supporter, Downtown Mansfield Inc.

“Thank you all for supporting me and having my back through moving and putting everything together,” she said. “I love all of you.”

Baker said she has worked on moving from her former location on Walnut Street for nearly ten years. She bought Downtown Wigs and Fashion in 2014 after retiring from working for the city for 36 years.

Fifth Ward Mansfield City Councilman Aurelio Diaz applauded Baker for operating a successful minority-owned business for nearly a decade.

“Cindy and her business here are a huge asset to the community,” he said. “It’s amazing to see how this building has transformed and made space for a service that we don’t have anywhere else.

“This is a huge accomplishment as a woman of color, and our city is better for it.”

Downtown Wigs carries synthetic wigs, as well as human hair and specialized wigs. It also offers hats, women’s clothing, handbags, jewelry, hair care products and cosmetics.

Baker said the store has wigs for all different styles and price points.

“Just like anything else, you get what you pay for,” she said. “If you want to invest in a nice wig and take care of it, it will last a long time.

“I will do my best to get customers exactly what they need.”

Baker graduated from Malabar High School in 1972. She retired from the city of Mansfield as the community development director in 2012.

“I love my city and being downtown, and I’m really excited to have this new space for our wigs and one-of-a-kind clothing,” Baker said.

“We have designer fashion vendors from all over — California, Texas, New York. We don’t have the store completely full yet since we remodeled everything, but we’re working on it.”

Downtown Wigs has customers from across the state of Ohio, some of whom Baker said she has known for as long as she’s owned the business.

“Downtown Wigs has been around for more than 30 years, and I’ve owned it for 10 of those,” she said. “A lot of our customers are from word-of-mouth.

“This new space gives us room to fit all of our inventory and give people a place to sit down. A place where our customers can feel like they’re at home.”
