One of the good guys, James Eugene “Jim” Smith, age 82, of Ontario, Ohio, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, October 17, 2024, with the support of his nieces Kayti Smith and Kristina Smith as he met his Lord and Savior in heaven. Our great hope is that he was warmly greeted by his parents, Harry Carmean Smith and Mary Elizabeth (Elliott) Smith, his stepmother Margaret Alice Bowman Smith, sister Rebecca “Becky” Morris, brother Michael “Mike” Smith and his infant brother whom he never had the chance to meet, along with other family members, friends, and beloved pets from over the years.

Jim was born on November 7, 1941, in Mansfield General Hospital. After graduating from Ontario High School, where he ran track, he attended college in Kansas City before entering the workforce. A proud Teamster, Jim dedicated many years to his career, working for various companies in the trucking industry, mainly Bender & Loudon, Preston, Yellow Freight, and other trucking companies. He drove mostly within a 50 mile radius of Mansfield. He was a LTL (less than a truckload) driver, worked the dock and peddled freight with which he had formed many good relationships. He also worked at Ideal Electric for three years, served as an auxiliary police officer for 10 years in Ontario and worked in the street department, contributing to his maternal family’s efforts in developing Ontario and the Ontario Methodist Church, where Jim has served as a deacon, into the thriving city it is today.
