MANSFIELD — Canton GlenOak earned its first win of the season with a convincing 52-14 verdict over Mansfield Senior in Friday night’s non-conference clash at Arlin Field.
Javi’ion McClendon showed early that he would be the story of this game. The Golden Eagles’ standout returned the opening kickoff 97 yards for a score, staking his team to a lead it would never relinquish.
McClendon also ran for 148 yards and two touchdowns and caught three passes for 55 yards and another TD. His 30-yard touchdown catch via a pass from quarterback Evan Crissy gave GlenOak a 14-0 lead.
Tygers’ QB Sean Sey Tanner hit Tai Pickett for a 41-yard scoring strike sliced the margin to 14-7 at the end of the first quarter. But Senior High could get no closer.
McClendon’s TD dashes of 5 and 85 yards goosed the advantage to 28-7 at halftime. Teammate Sean Leahy’s 32-yard touchdown run made it 35-7 early in the third period.
The Tygers responded when Tanner tossed a 31-yard TD pass to Isaiah Darson to close within 35-14 with 9:38 left in the third quarter, but it was all GlenOak after that.
The Golden Eagles were dominant on the ground, with 228 yards rushing. Meanwhile, Mansfield Senior had minus-14 yards rushing on 18 attempts.
Tanner was 16-of-28 passing for 187 yards and two touchdowns to pace the Tygers’ offense. Pickett snagged four catches for 62 yards.
GlenOak improved to 1-8 this season and hosts Massillon Perry in next week’s regular-season finale.
Senior High is 1-8 heading into next week’s clash at arch-rival Madison.
