MANSFIELD — Nothing is set in stone, but a handful of area schools can likely make their postseason plans.
Ashland, Ontario, Shelby, Hillsdale and Danville already have secured playoff bids, according to computer ratings maven Joe Eitel, while Lexington, Galion and Fredericktown control their own destinies.
None of the 20 schools in the three-plus county coverage area has been mathematically eliminated with just two weeks remaining in the regular season.
Division II
The undefeated Arrows are third in Region 7 of Division II in this week’s Ohio High School Athletic Associations weekly ratings, which were unveiled Tuesday afternoon. Ashland moved up one spot from last week and visits Wooster (2-6) on Friday.
Division III
Lexington (4-4) slipped just one spot in the Region 10 ratings despite last week’s loss at New Philadelphia. The Minutemen are 11th in this week’s ratings and host Madison (1-7) on Friday.
Division IV
Unbeaten Ontario and Shelby meet Friday in Shelby in a game that will almost certainly determine the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference championship. The winner also will inherit a windfall of computer points. The Warriors are second in Region 14 of Division IV, while the Whippets are third.
Galion (5-3) is seventh in Region 14 after snapping a three-game losing streak last week. The Tigers visit River Valley (5-3) on Friday in another key Region 14 game. The Vikings are sixth in the region.
Division V
Fredericktown (5-3) moved up one spot in the Region 18 ratings after last week’s win over East Knox. The Freddies are 14th in the regional ratings with games at Danville (6-2) on Friday and at Centerburg (5-3) in Week 10.
East Knox (4-4) slipped to 18th in Region 18. The Bulldogs visit Centerburg on Friday.
Division VI
Crestview is still 20th in Region 22 despite last week’s heart-breaking 16-15 loss at St. Paul. The Cougars (3-5) host Western Reserve (6-2) on Friday.
In Region 23, Centerburg slipped from 11th to 13th after last week’s loss at Danville. The Trojans (5-3) host East Knox (4-4) on Friday.
Division VII
Both Hillsdale and Danville are virtual locks for the postseason, the undefeated Falcons in Region 25 and the Blue Devils (6-2) in Region 27.
Hillsdale still trails Western Reserve (7-1) in the Region 25 ratings. The Falcons visit Rittman (4-4) on Friday before hosting Norwayne (7-1) in the Wayne County Athletic League championship game in Week 10.
Crestline (4-4) and Lucas (4-4) are 14th and 15th, respectively, in Region 25. The Bulldogs, who are in search of their first playoff appearance since 2005, visit North Baltimore (3-5) on Friday. The Cubs visit Kansas Lakota (2-6).
Danville jumped two spots in the Region 27 ratings after last week’s win over Centerburg. The Blue Devils host Fredericktown in another big points game before visiting East Knox for the Devil-Dog Game in Week 10.
The top eight schools in each region are eligible to host first-round games.
