MANSFIELD — North central Ohio saw a rare treat on Thursday night. The illuminated night sky was full of sun particles smashing into our atmosphere and leaving wisps of purples, greens and blood reds.

The “northern lights” gallery follows a giant circular path through Ashland and Richland counties, starting with Charles Mill Lake. Then to The Ohio State Reformatory, Piper Road, Lahm Airport, a baseball field on Ohio 13, Ohio State Mansfield / NC State campus, Clear Fork Reservoir, Pleasant Hill Dam and the top of Mohican country.

The photos were taken with an iPhone 15 in night mode. The time lapse was auto adjusted to between 15 and 30 seconds, depending on the lighting and if I was lazy enough or not to get out the tripod. Exposure was tweaked a little in the negatives around the water shots.

I was also armed with a Canon 70D and watched all these videos and read a whole bunch of stuff and set my ISO to 800, shutter speed to 10 seconds, put the f-stop in the fastest setting, and boy oh boy did I not get it to work.

If it was my camera I would have smashed it into the ground and stomped on it with my Muck boots, but it belonged to Source Media.
