Location: The trout was caught on the Missouri River at Gates of the Mountains, about 20 miles north of Helena, Montana.

Date: Aug 30,2024

Species: 22 inch Rainbow Trout

The temps had been in the 90s but a storm front was moving in and temps had cooled off to the low 70s that morning. A friend and I took my bass boat out hoping to catch some walleye when this idiot trout hit my lure. We were jigging in about 35 feet. We hadn’t hit anything between 6am and 10 am, although we saw a bear, 5 bald eagles also fishing, several deer laughing at us from the shore, and about 1015 I had a couple light hits and then he hit hard. I set the hook and figured I had a nice sized walleye. Nope, I got the trout village idiot hitting on a purple 3/8ounce jig for walleye produced locally by a guide and his dad. A half hour later my buddy caught this one’s buddy the same way. Both were between 22 and 23 inches. Norman McLean wrote a book about the area where we were fishing called ,”Young men and Fire”.
