LEXINGTON: Dixie Hirby, age 93, passed away on September 22, 2024 at Mill Creek Nursing and Rehab in Galion, Ohio. Always considerate and loving, Dixie will be remembered by her loved ones for her friendliness and generous nature.

Born in Dony, Kentucky to Barth and Belle (Alley) Gayheart on March 7, 1931. Dixie lived many years in Miami County, Ohio before moving North to “The Farm” near Perrysville, Ohio. She loved Jesus and shared that love with others, making a permanent impact on many lives. She enjoyed a variety of occupations throughout her life, but loved home healthcare, working as a caregiver for patients in their homes. She was well-suited to such a career as a truly kind-hearted person who always strived to make those around her content and comfortable. She loved to cook for her family and friends, always trying to please everyone with their favorite dish. She enjoyed crocheting, making many hats, scarves and other special creations, giving them to her family and friends. She especially enjoyed making baby blankets for newborns.

Dixie is survived by children Larry (Donna) Hamilton, Lois (Michael) Crawford, Debra (Quention) Short, and Wilma Martin; step-children Steve (Pat) Hirby and John (Nancy) Hirby, and 14 beloved grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Hirby, stepdaughter Tecla Kellar, her parents, Barth and Belle Gayheart, and all of her many siblings.

The family would like to thank the amazing staff of Mill Creek for their love, friendship and care to Dixie during her stay there. Also a special thanks to Gentiva Hospice.

In memory of Dixie’s charitable and helpful spirit, her family asks that loved ones make contributions in her name to Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, Samaritan’s Purse.
Dixie’s family invites friends and loved ones to call on Friday, September 27 from 11 am to 1pm with a service at 1 pm at Snyder Funeral Home, 2553 Lexington Avenue, Lexington, Ohio. Burial immediately following at Greenlawn Union Cemetery in Perrysville.
