MANSFIELD — Chris McDevitt has built a business out of destruction.
Internet technology data destruction, that is.
“Our business avoids the digital version of dumpster diving,” said CEO Christopher McDevitt. “If it’s smart, it’s vulnerable. We help wipe information from hard drives and destroy it to the necessary security standards.”
Mansfield Technologies is one of only three companies in the United States that offers mobile classified destruction services. Its mobile trailer includes three National Security Agency-approved pieces of equipment that degauss and shred hard drives.
The shredded drives can be converted to 2-millimeter dust that’s recycled into microprocessor chips.
“You have to think about your risk spectrum and who you’re worried about coming after this data,” McDevitt said.
“The NSA wants to protect against spy agencies, and there have been cases of spy agencies getting data off 4 millimeter pieces of hard drives. So 2 millimeters is their highest standard.”
Mansfield Technologies celebrated its new business with a ribbon cutting on Sept. 20.
“We’re a data-driven society and everyone knows that,” said county commissioner Cliff Mears. “It’s an absolutely wonderful business to have in Mansfield.”
Mayor Jodie Perry thanked the McDevitts for choosing to base their business in Richland County.
“Thanks for stepping forward to do this — I think it’s an area that we have some need in,” Perry said. “I know you’re going to be very successful.”
A former IT professional for Amazon Web Services, McDevitt lives in Lexington and grew up in Hartville, Ohio.
“When the 179th announced that it was converting to a cyber wing, that made Mansfield really attractive as a base to set up a new business,” he said. “Everything in this truck is authorized to destroy national security classified data.
“If a sensitive data leak is tracked back to a company’s negligence, you can sue them and there’s no statute of limitations on that. So it can be a very costly mistake when you trust the wrong people and processes.”
Mansfield Technologies can destroy data from hard disk drives, solid state drives, M.2 drives, tape, floppy disks, RAID cards, SD cards, USB drives and other computer hardware.
The company can serve governments, military organizations, hospitals, banks, individuals and any organization that needs sensitive data destruction at the highest security standards.
Mansfield Technologies to travel across the U.S.
Dan McDevitt, Chris’ father, is the director of business development – financial services.
“I’m going to be on the road going to conventions and developing the business,” he said. “I was in field sales for most of my career, so I’m used to it. Chris has plans to tap into lots of different areas.”
The company is prepared to travel anywhere in the contiguous U.S. and offers free consultations to determine which National Institute of Standards and Technology 800-88 security level to follow or if a company needs to achieve NSA PM 9-12.
McDevitt said any customer can contact the company for on-site data destruction online or via email at contact@mansfieldtech.us.
