MANSFIELD — A Mansfield man faces life in prison if convicted of the alleged raping of two children under 10-years-old.
Jose Flores, 46, was indicted on 10 counts of rape by a Richland County Grand Jury in October 2023. Richland County Prosecutor Jodie Schumacher discussed details Monday regarding the latest grand jury sessions.
She said Flores’ alleged actions were initially reported a few years ago.
“We asked law enforcement to do some additional investigations,” Schumacher said. “They completed some more interviews.”
After further investigations, law enforcement authorities reported the alleged incidents occurred from December 2008 to Dec. 31, 2015. The alleged sexual abuse happened in Ontario and either Lexington or Richland County.
Flores’ final pretrial is set for Oct. 2 and his jury trial is scheduled to begin Nov. 4.
Smith’s charges include three counts of rape
Bret Smith, 56, of Mansfield, was indicted by a Richland County Grand Jury on June 21, 2024 on five charges, including three counts of rape and two counts of gross sexual imposition.
Alleged offenses took place between May 2021 and November 2023, Schumacher said. Of the gross sexual imposition charges, she said “a number of sexual touching” incidents are alleged.
Smith’s rape counts involve “digital penetration,” Schumacher said.
The victims of the alleged abuse are juveniles, the prosecutor said, but they’re not young enough for Smith to face a life prison sentence. His next trial date is set for Oct. 15.
Carter charged with two counts of murder
William Carter, 43, of Akron, was indicted on two counts of murder, felonious assault, a firearm specification, having weapons under disability and tampering with evidence.
Carter’s charges stem from a fatal Mansfield shooting, which occurred April 30, 2023 at 20 Dunbilt Court.
The dispute between Carter and the victim resulted from a conversation the night before the shooting, Schumacher said.
“There was a disagreement leading up to it,” she said. “The two people were familiar with one another. Ultimately, it culminated into their paths crossing the following day.”
Carter’s case, scheduled for trial Sept. 12, was continued.
In a separate case, he’s been indicted on charges of aggravated burglary, burglary, grand theft when the property is a firearm of dangerous ordnance and having weapons while under disability.
