Raymond E. Peterson, 82, of Mansfield went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, September 5, 2024.
Ray was born on December 12, 1941 in Mansfield, Ohio, the son of Lewis and Helen (Hout) Peterson. He graduated from Madison High School in 1959 and then married the love of his life, Judy (Dawson) Peterson on February 2, 1963, recently celebrating 61 years of marriage. Ray retired from his insurance agency in 2020 after 52 years in business.
He was a member of Mayflower Congregational Church where he chaired Church Council and chaired the Board of Trustees.
Ray never met a stranger, but if he did, he always found a way to connect with them. Ray enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play sports – as well as coaching them. He was a huge fan of Madison Athletics, and in August was inducted into the Madison Athletic Hall of Fame for his high school accomplishments and his contributions to Madison sports throughout his life. He also coached the McVey Post American Legion Baseball Team for 30 years, coaching and mentoring many of the best players in the area during that time. He maintained a great love for sports throughout his lifetime, rooting on his favorite teams, the Madison Rams, The Ohio State Buckeyes, and Cleveland Indians, Browns, and Cavaliers.
Along with his wife Judy, Ray is survived by sons Ed Peterson and Rob (Heather) Peterson both of Mansfield; grandchildren Morgan (Peter) Martin of Medina, Blake Peterson, Cory (Holly) Peterson, and Desiree (Cory) Hornikel all of Mansfield; great grandchildren Grayson Peterson, Blythe Hornikel, Ethan Martin, Leah Martin, Collins Martin, and Chandler Martin; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Kathy and Russ Spidel of Bryant, GA, and George and Linda Dawson of Bucyrus, and nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Bob Peterson, and cousins Dick Peterson and Jane Peterson.
The Peterson family will receive guests Sunday, September 8, 2024 from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Finefrock Chapel of the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home and also on Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. His funeral service will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home. Pastor Doug Fitch will officiate. Burial will follow in Windsor Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory to Mayflower Congregational Church Memorial Fund may be made at the funeral home.
