SHELBY — On Sunday, Aug. 25, the Shelby FFA helped the Shelby Police Department put on the annual Fishing Derby at the Shelby Community Airport.
A total of 840 fish were caught by the 157 young fishermen that registered and participated in the derby.
Members of the police department and the FFA worked together to measure and record the fish that were caught, hand out prizes and hand out food cooked by FFA members.

The smallest fish of the day was a 2-inch fish caught by Amelia Dewitt and Hayes Thompson caught 77 fish earning him the most fish award.
The awards for each age category are as follows:
Boys ages three to six:
— Walter Brown, 15 1/2-inch paint turtle
— Connor Gibson, 3 2/4-inch bluegill
— Owen Jayes, 8 1/2-inch bluegill
Girls ages three to six:
— Mazie Pankuch, 8-inch bluegill
— Kylie Hicks, 7 1/2-inch bluegill
— Claire Wright, 7-inch bluegill
Boys ages seven to 10:
— Max Mullins, 9-inch bluegill
— Toby Westbrook, 9-inch bluegill
— Hunter Spearman, 8 1/2-inch bluegill
Girls ages seven to 10:
— Willow Hales, 9-inch bluegill
— Kendall Hales, 9-inch bluegill
— Bexley Bowman, 9-inch bluegill
Boys ages 11 to 15:
— Sean Nolen, 14-inch bass
— Samuel Thompson, 13 1/2-inch bass
— Landon Patton, 9-inch bluegill
Girls ages 11 to 15:
— Reese Adkins, 12 1/2-inch bass
— Mia Mullins, 8 3/4-inch bluegill
— Serenity Potts, 8 1/2-inch bluegill
